September 2003

Dear Book Group Member...

Our Featured Book for September comes from a master of the modern thriller-DAVID LINDSEY. His latest, THE RULES OF SILENCE takes a hard turn and drives the genre into the realm of international crime and across the line that separates terrorism and criminalism. The long-time Austin resident will go Face-to-Face with the Book Group on WEDNESDAY SEPTEMBER 24 at 7:00 PM to talk about writing, reading, and the perils of life in the year 2003.

In The Rules of Silence, self-made millionaire and decidedly nice fellow Titus Cain is enjoying life. He relishes the comfort of his sprawling Central Texas ranch/estate, loves his wife, and owns a high-tech company that has managed to survive the economic downturn. How, then, should he react to the strange and brutal man who appears on his patio one day to demand $64 million? There is to be no negotiating. No authorities will be involved. And, says the strange man, people around you will die until the "debt" is paid in full.

And so Titus Cain's peace of mind comes instantly unravelled. He's being held for ransom without being kidnapped. He's faced with losing his fortune, his lifestyle, and people he dearly loves. There is no one he can turn to and there are no rules for him to follow.

Lindsey doesn't shy away from the rough stuff, but the Rules of Silence is smart and sophisticated. David Lindsay knows how to push our bone-chiller buttons-and he's not afraid to do it.

Universal Pictures has purchased David Lindsey's latest novel, "The Rules of Silence,", reports Variety.

The thriller concerns a businessman held captive by a South American criminal who threatens to kill his friends and family. The businessman is forced to pay millions of dollars in ransom, until he fights back with the help of a former government agent.

Lindsey has published twelve novels, including "Mercy," which became an HBO movie with Ellen Barkin.

The studio has a prior relationship with Lindsey. Several years ago it optioned his novel "Requiem for a Glass Heart" as a vehicle for Demi Moore.

HBO Movie"Mercy"

HBO premiered its adaptation of Mercy in 1999, based on David's best-selling novel. The HBO production stars Ellen Barkin and is directed by Damian Harris.

Review

MERCY. A naked woman is found dead in her apartment-the second in a series of ritualistic killings. On the scene is homicide detective Catherine Palmer (Ellen Barkin), a recent widow, whose colleagues reject her talent as an investigator. It isn't long before Catherine meets the dead woman's friend, Vickie (Peta Wilson), and discovers the existence of a group of executive women whose after hours activities involve a collage of masks, whips and chains.

By murder number three, the investigation leads to Dr. Broussard (Julian Sands), a psychiatrist with obviously more than a professional relationship with a few of his patients. His involvement sends Catherine further down a spiral as she finds herself attracted not only more to Vickie but also to the all-consuming world she has entered. It is this whirlwind of emotions that Catherine must now battle to find the killer.

Producer Amedeo Ursini's four-year dream to bring David L. Lindsey's best-selling psychosexual thriller to the screen is superbly and carefully crafted under the direction of Damian Harris. Through an extraordinary collaboration, including an exquisite cast lead by Ellen Barkin, Mercy is not simply a taut, psychological mystery, but also a haunting view of damaged people who need our compassion.
